In the heart of the Dolomites: the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Braies
West of San Vigilio – along the Braies Valley towards Dobbiaco and Alta Badia – the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Braies covers an area of more than 25,000 hectares. Thus, it is one of the largest protected areas in South Tyrol. In the dense spruce forests, the groves, the mountain pastures, the alpine meadows and the lakes of this natural area there is an impressive biodiversity. Here, with a little luck, you may observe the wood goose during courtship; at higher altitudes, there are mountain hares and edelweiss flowers by the wayside. From your holiday apartment in San Vigilio, it is only a short walk to enjoy a day trip to the beauty of the nature park.
A day trip to Lake Braies
A special destination in the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Braies is Lake Braies, surrounded by many inaccessible rocks. Here, you may easily see chamois or a stately ibex in front of your binoculars. The “pearl among the Dolomites lakes” invites you to take a walk along the lakeside – or maybe you and your family prefer a boat tour. The secluded lake and the surrounding mountains are a true delight and a place of intense relaxation.
Two adventure trails across untouched nature
The nature park Fanes-Sennes-Braies offers two nature experience paths, each of which has a special theme. On the “Larch Trail“, you may roam across the diverse landscapes of the nature park, stopping at several interactive stations. The trail is dedicated to the larch pastures in the Val Badia above San Cassiano. On the adventure trail around the “Dobbiaco Lake“, you will discover the waters of the Dolomites and learn interesting facts that will fascinate every nature lover.
